California travel guide Veronica Hill tours the USS Midway Museum in San Diego in this episode of “California Travel Tips.”
First, a bit of USS Midway history: During its 47 years as a US Navy aircraft carrier, the ship evacuated more than 3,000 Saigon refugees, led operations in the Persian Gulf, and rescued more than 1,800 Americans in Mt. Pinatubo.
When it was built in 1945, the USS Midway was the largest ship in the world, weighing 69,000 tons and measuring 1,001 feet.
In 2004, the aircraft carrier opened as a museum, making its permanent home in sunny San Diego. Today, it’s one of the most popular San Diego attractions.
USS Midway Tours are available on the ship’s Island. Here, docents will take you up to the captain’s bridge and control tower, where you’ll learn more about the Midway’s daily operations.

I went in Oct. 2016. It was an awesome time.
I went here with my school on a Senior trip. We also went to Old Town San Diego. Worst school trip ever!!!!
But the museum was great! There was an awesome self guided audio tour, and a movie too. That's was great. It was also Memorial Day weekend, so they had veterans to talk to people and other events. Great museum, I would love to go again and see everything I couldn't because of my stupid school excursion…
Yeah I remember that galley during Desert Storm, but the food didn't look so glamorous.
Haven't been to the museum, but would love to visit for a tour down memory lane.
Hope you had fun!
Thanks for your service!

Yes, it's a bit of a maze down in the lower levels of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th decks (City at Sea). I got lost in the first 2 minutes. 🙂
I think I went there, can't you go under and there's tons and tons of tunnels?
Midway tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for kids ages 6-15. Military personnel, veterans and kids under 6 are free! Discounts are available online for $16.
Thanks! It's a fascinating place. I highly recommend checking it out. 🙂
