San Diego has declined into a cesspool, rivaling LA and San Francisco, if not surpassing them. Once my favorite spot to unwind and soak in the tourist vibe, it nosedived post-2020, spiraling into disarray. The city's military roots have now transformed into one of the most "woke" cities in the country.
In 1970 as a high-schooler, a friend and I discovered "Rum-Runner's/Smuggler's Cave" and took the romantic tales of Prohibition Era San Diego as gospel. 40 years later, my grown son, an avid surfer, discovered the same place. He was surprised to hear that I had explored the same place in my youth. Rekindling my interest (2015), and then having internet access, I found out the stories about illegal Prohibition tales were just that. Stories.
Albert Spalding , co-founder of Spalding Sporting Goods, was a follower and devotee of a strange mystic woman—Madam Helena Blavatsky. Spalding, who was also an architect, designed a mansion complete with a retreat center for Blavatsky's Theosophical Society after she passed away in 1891 which was eventually donated to Southwestern College (Now Point Loma Nazarene College). So-called "Smuggler's Cave" was actually the remnant of a defunct attraction, "Sunset Cliffs Park" built in 1917 by Spalding, to serve as a local tourist attraction and "feeder" to the Theosophical Institute. The attraction was still in operation during the Prohibition Era but not used for any nefarious purpose. https://www.sohosandiego.org/lostsd/sunset_cliffs.htm Sorry for the spoiler, but I found the story about Madam Blavatsky's institute and Albert Spalding almost as fascinating. I hope y'all do too. —Native San Diegan, born 1954.
Sometimes is best to keep some places hidden. They either don’t hold a crowd well, or are kinda dangerous and get closed when unknowing tourists get hurt there.
Hi, you need to check out Rose Canyon Trail! you can access the trail here ->1022 Rose Canyon Trl, San Diego, CA 92117
great
You can probably do a full vid on the Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge Hike.
🤙🤙🤙
Pirate's Cove in Sunset Cliffs. The tunnel use to finish at a house which still stands. The tunnel was sealed off and beyond the blockage, is the house wine cellar.
Great videos, I got started watching your video on SD now I’ve watched a bunch of them. Makes me homesick from Charlotte. Thanks again!
I learned of some new to me hikes. Very well presented.
Armando, San Diego is crowded enough. Let people discover these places without Youtube promotion, making the places more crowded. Let's don't make Mexico City in San Diego.
Been there !!! Are you sure ?
Cowles is Coles mt. Everyone gets it wrong.
Check out Iron Mountain
I know that guy!!!!!!
Thanks for watching! What are your favorite outdoor adventures in San Diego?
