San Diego straddles two worlds. The California dream — surfing, beaches, palm trees, the West Coast lifestyle. And right below it, just a quick drive away, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico and the busiest land border crossing in the world.
Here’s where we visit in this video:
• Windansea Beach
• Ocean Beach Farmer’s Market (Wednesday nights)
• Seafood La 57
• Playa de Tijuana
• Tacos El “Franc”
• San Ysidro Port of Entry
• Chicano Park
• Taco Stand (La Jolla)

Moved here for work three and a half years ago, and I will never leave. I consider Santa Cruz, where I grew up, and San Diego to be home.
* Surfing on the U.S. mainland began in Santa Cruz, California, in July 1885. Three teenage Hawaiian princes—David Kawānanakoa, Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, and Edward Keliʻiahonui—surfed the mouth of the San Lorenzo River using heavy, custom boards carved from local redwood trees.Early Milestones on the Mainland1885 (Santa Cruz, CA): The Hawaiian princes made history with their first documented "surfboard swimming" session on the West Coast.1907 (Los Angeles, CA): Hawaiian native George Freeth demonstrated surfing as a publicity stunt in the South Bay area (Redondo Beach and Venice), sparking broader public interest.1910s–1920s (Southern California & Beyond): Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku famously popularized surfing across Southern California and Australia, transforming it into a mainstream modern sport.🏄🏾♂️🌴🌞🏄🏽🌴☀️😎🏄🏽🌴
San Diego it full of drugs and lowlifes. Imperial Beach is the worst. Santee by the beach is what they call it. Lots of racism embedded in that town with the locals. You're constantly smelling sewage. There's a ton of drugs being peddled in the schools and the tweakers will steal out of your car at night if it gets left unlocked. Crazy they market that place as a clean beach town. That's only the case for about two blocks from the beach. Then it's gang zones and drug ridden apartments. Bring your family here if you want a lifetime of rehab and/or jail for your kids..
Our border patrol agent was "actually" very nice. Of course the agent was nice. What were you expecting?
It's not politically charged, it happens to be the law.
I'm grateful for being born and raised in the Mission Bay area . At 60 I still live in San Diego County in Oceanside, it's awesome but crowded and expensive!!!!
You remind me of phoebe cates
❤
I married a young Navy officer and that meant San Diego for a bunch of my early married years. It was a whole new world to a New England girl who had moved easily in very harsh winters. We lived on the edge of the Mission Bay sand. Not sure I would fit in now..
"Who's really illegal here" umm ppl who are here against the law. Why are you highlighting these ppl who are in favor of breaking laws?
high quality vid def the hidden gem rn
I Know I can never be able to travel around the world. It's very sad for me. But this girl makes me feel amazing. Through her eyes I could travel. Thank You❤❤ ❤
What a video. Captures the vibe and everything.
In America? No. In the United States? Maybe
NOT anymore
..it's Soo overpopulated and run down… compared to how it used to be…🥲
San Diego definitely is a fast paced city. But there are parts of the county where it’s chill and slower paced and that’s more on the eastern side of San Diego. I’ve lived here my whole life except for 1yr when I moved up north to Merced and somehow San Diego called me back home and I wish I did not listen to my homesick side of things and stayed up north. Don’t get me wrong, I love it here, it’s just so expensive to live here. I’d do anything to move out to the country and surround myself by the woods and mountains. I’d much rather live out there with the beautiful mountains than live here where it’s always busy and packed. Even during the night time it’s so busy, we never get a slow moment here. I wish it were more quiet and peaceful at night.
been here since 1991 getting too crowded , too many left wing types , too many air b&b
Native Californian and lived in every major city- San Diego is summed up in one word: Weather
After which; Everything else false inline
Watching this from Iran, born and raised here. Ever since I was a kid, it's been my dream to live in the US someday. I'm 38 now, and honestly, I feel like I'm running out of time. That dream has stayed with me my whole life, but because of my financial situation, I can't do much about it. I don't think I'll ever make it there, but I'll never stop dreaming.
The past few months have been incredibly lonely for me, so watching videos like this that show a little piece of American life and culture always fascinates me. They remind me of how much I love the US and how badly I want to move there someday.

Monterey is far better. San Diego is terrible more like horrible. 4 more years of college and we are out of this hell hole and back to the elegant culture of Monterey, CA.
We're big fans!
Damn, no offense but SoCal people are the worst, the first few dudes you talked to all suck. That dude at 7:45 bitter as hell, he can't look around without seeing people invading his land. I bet you he preaches fk 1ce too
The west coast is better than the east coast by far sunny california😎
1:36 I hate being this guy, but where you are is not 10 mins from the border unless that’s imperial beach
😂😂😂 What dream !!! You have to trip over the homeless on the streets here everyday ! Are you kidding me ☠️💀💰

She forgot to explain how contaminated San Diego beaches are because of Tijuana untreated sewage discharged directly into the ocean.
San Diego in reality is only a good life if you have financial security "wealthy family and connections/career". Or you will eventually get priced out of the nice towns and probably won't be able to afford to commute to the desirable areas of SD that often. The military is the biggest employer. However, those branches in the US military routinely discharge their servicemen. Most of East SD isn't pretty at all!
Great job.
Please, improve your boring writing. Everything you say is predictably cringe.
You also look so pretty good
Look so beautiful
The question you keep asking people about tension because of the current Administration is really annoying. And the guy who said it was taken illegally I have two points number one your government conceded the land to the US so no, it's not illegal. And two Mexicans are on stolen land also…the Spaniards stole Mexico from natives. Why people think it was only white Europeans than colonized perplexes me. The Spaniards were ruthless and every Mexican can be considered a colonizer and on stolen land as much as any US citizen. There's that inconvenient fact so you can STFU
I am 63-year-old San Diego Native. We all get along here. All races. I am white and feel very lucky to be raised in So Cal and Baja. Just don't be a dick and you are good in SD. Go Padres!
Palms are palms not trees. How do you tell the age of a tree? You count the annual rings in cross section. Palms don't have rings because they are not trees.
lol ya right they have Tijuana shit rolling up on their beaches. Pathetic
Redondo and Laguna exceed quality of beach and life.
Don't tell me about Native Americans and stolen land because I will refer you to the Romans, Crusuaders, the Vikings, the Indian tribes themselves, and the Ottoman etc. who all took land from one another. The US bought California territories and Louisiana territories and Florida territories.
Read the law. Legal migration through the ports of entry are welcome. Those who sneak in and do not document themselves are not welcome. Stop conflicting legal migration and illegal entry! Shame on you for your deceptive comments.
America is amazing and Money Land true My GOD
Lived here for as long as I can remember, sure we've got our issues but there is no other place I would rather be.
Any mention of the Tijuana river valley polluting everything?
I lived in San Diego about 6 years. I'm from the Northeast. It was a long time dream. Beautiful city. My favorite place I've lived. I miss, but moved for work. Good jobs are tough to find in SD! I live in Sacramento. It is a hellhole. Don't believe the hype. Absolute horrible place to live! I'm gonna move back East asap to be near family. I'm heartbroken I could not convince any of my family members to move out there with me. It is the only place that ever felt like home and a piece of me will always be there.
Hi,I'm REd from Morocco,I have been in San Diego CORONADO in 2000,it's wonderful city, thanks for recall me those best memories.
My dream place to live
Nothing like getting off the plane in San Diego!!
I started surfing with my 2 best friends between Baja and up to Manhattan Beach it’s what we lived for. Chasing surf back and forth between Mexico and the L.A. coast, winter tanned from the neck up hands and ankles down. And the truth about Wind & Sea is it was the home of the Surf Nazis! They acted like it too, we were occasionally up for dawn patrol there, but My and my friends break was Swamis, Stone Steps, Pontos, we surfed boards shaped by Gary Linden, Sammy Hawk, Dick Brewer, G&S, Bear, I nosed a Sunset Egg for years at Blacks big waves. Now? It’s a bunch of “surfers” not like we did, we would fill the tank of my Toyota up and jet to K38 if no surf, back up to Trestles! No one does that today more posers than anything!
Great video. Can't wait to visit SD. I think my wife and I will snow bird there.
San Diego is where you go to become the person you were born to be ❤😊California is San Diego and San Diego is CA 😊
