You can get bus transfers from the metro and those are free.
I'd HIGHLY recommend renting a Lime scooter or CityBike. They're economically affordable and make it easy to get around on.
Stand on the left, walk on the right is probably the best bit of advice. People here are generally nice, but we're also generally in a hurry. Nothing peeves local more than a clueless tourist hogging both lanes.
Dulles might as well be in another Metro area it's so comically far from the city. BWI is just fine, take the Marc train.
DC tourism infrastructure is subpar, and the city is not exciting anyway. I'd skip it unless it's the last city that you have yet to visit.

You were wrong about the train. Do not stop on the mall is actually a train stop that literally lets out on the Mall.
I’ve been driving in DC since 1976. It is not an easy place to drive, even with years of experience, it’s not easy.
Do NOT eat at the food trucks outside of the musems on the national mall. I know they look like a convienient alternative, but they prey on tourists with high prices for substandard products. If you're desperate, hey, we've all been there, but you'd be much better served by heading a block or two away and eating there. Food delivery apps are also an option too.
I've lived just outside DC all my life. These are great tips. The one thing I'd say is the rain chance seems a bit exaggerated. It is mostly based on time of year. Yes, it is not uncommon for spring rains and summer thunderstorms (in the evening) which can be torrential but otherwise the odds are it will not rain. Just check weather apps. Unless you are unlucky, you will have a mostly dry visit.
I wish I would pay a separate train/bus fare for a 6yr🤣🤣
This will be more helpful to people traveling after August. The food kiosks on the National Mall have recently been put under new management. I tried one and really liked it. I plan to try others once all of the fences on the National Mall come down.

Pretty good video for navigating my home. However, for privacy, please purchase Smart Trip. At max, place $10-20 on the card . It should cover most of your trip. Once the trip is over, cut the card.
So as someone who worked in dc at the national mall there is parking. This guy obviously doesn’t know about it lol. So at the national mall you can park underneath the metro area where the spy museum is. Also behind usda on the corner there are two surface lots. There is also parking across from usda where the cherry blossoms are. There are tow surface lots there. There are also several metro stations where you can park overnight for cheaper depending on where in the city you are. This is not even close to being correct
Also public transit there are plenty of stops on the national mall and near library of congress or congress and the White House. Do you even know dc? So national mall there are 4 stops. Smithsonian is a stop. Judiciary square is on the far side of the national mall and you walk across one street and you are there. Lenfant plaza is less than 300 feet from the national mall. Federal triangle as well.
For congress its capitol south and drops you off at the Madison building of library of congress. Once there you go into Madison go into the basement and you can access all three loc buildings and the house building and longworth building.
The cafeterias at the American Indian Museum and African American History Museum are both great, but yes they are expensive. All the other Smithsonian cafeterias are just expensive.
The real play is to get a to go lunch near the Portrait Gallery and eat in the atrium there. Super convenient, relaxing, and beautiful space.

Technically, a lot of people fly into BWI airport. They would either rent a car there and possibly drop it off at the other airport if they’re flying out of them. Or, they would take the Marc train from BWI to Union Station DC for around $8

The biggest attraction for me would be the Smithsonian. After then the mall and monuments. It's surprising and weird the Smith doesn't provide better food. Definetly would go April or May for the most comfortable weather.
BWI is a an $8 one way MARC train ride from BWI to Union Station in DC (near the Capitol building). Free 10 minute shuttle bus ride to the train station at BWI and then about a 30 minute ride to DC. At Union Station, there is the Metro Red Line.
Go to the Old Post Office if you can't get to the Washington Monument. It's a bit hard to find, but worth it. You get great views from the top and it's not crowded.

BWI is connected to mass transit to the metro DC as well. You can hop the MARC train (or Amtrak) from BWI for about $7 and take the 45min train ride into Union Station. It probably takes the same amount of time to get from DCA to downtown DC as BWI.

We were in DC in late July and was shocked by the heat. It was unbearable, honestly worse than anywhere else I’ve been 😅
