Saw Carol Burnett on a talk show just last week, (she's in her nineties now) and she was talking about how her and her friends would climb up and would actually be sitting on the scaffolding behind the letters! She was about ten at the time and said it was a wonder they didn't break their necks. She was born and grew up in Hollywood and it was at a time where there was no fencing blocking you from actually sitting on the letters. She said her favourite letter was the "O" and she would stick her head through it and look out at all the hills! 😊

If anyone is wondering if this still works, just tried this in May 2025 and yes, it still works. However, I did just get an uber to the top, then it’s a short walk to the white wall
Even GTA 5 made this a piece of cake.
The residents would be happier if parking lots and concessions were built for the sign. Everyone would benefit and tourists could easily view the sign, take their instagram pictures and grab a snack.

Yeah, I got got by Google and ended up at the Griffith Park Observatory when I was in LA. Cool place though. It's where the opening of "Terminator" was filmed. I didn't realize until I was standing there that if they turned the camera 90 degrees during that opening sequence you would've been able to see the Hollywood sign.

It sounds to me like there's no easy to find, tourist-friendly place to view it. Which is absurd because it's an American icon. When I saw it in the 90s, the tour bus stopped in one of the neighborhoods, but where, I don't know, and it wasn't s great view.
