  1. Recreational vessels, on the other hand, are a much larger issue. With over 1 million registered boats in Florida, their activities—propeller scarring, soft groundings, fuel spills, and high-speed jet ski disturbances—cause widespread damage. Propeller scarring alone has affected over 30,000 acres of seagrass in South Florida, creating furrows that disrupt seagrass meadows and take years to recover (Florida Museum). Jet skis exacerbate this by stirring sediment in shallow waters, reducing light penetration critical for seagrass photosynthesis, and their older two-stroke engines can leak unburned fuel, adding chemical stress (EPA). The post notes that while liveaboard impacts are concentrated, recreational vessels’ broader activity amplifies their cumulative damage, making them a more significant threat to seagrass ecosystems.

How about designating the Intracoastal Waterway as a National Park? Impact: Transforming the Intracoastal Waterway into a National Park, with mooring fields, pumpout boats, and shoreside facilities managed by the National Park Service, would control boating impacts. Designated mooring areas would reduce random anchoring, minimizing seagrass damage, while pumpout facilities would cut vessel waste pollution. National Park status could also secure federal funding for restoration, as seen in the Everglades (NPS).

  3. Good video, however; as a resident of Islamorada I was surprised that after 20 years of you coming to the Keys, you don't know how to pronounce Islamorada. It's pronounced "eye la morada" and it's not an island, it's a Village of Islands. Again, good video, though.

  4. Visited Bradenton in early May for a wedding, it was beautiful, we hit Anna Marie island and swam in the Gulf of Mexico, very clear water, looking to take a Keys trip for my 1 year wedding anniversary next year🎉
