We’re visiting San Diego, California for the first time, and after years of people telling us we had to come here, we finally understand why.
This is the final stop on our California road trip, and honestly… we weren’t prepared for how much we would love this city. From the relaxed atmosphere and incredible weather to the beaches, neighbourhoods, and food, San Diego instantly felt like one of those places you could actually imagine living.
In this video we explore some of the most talked-about parts of the city including Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, Balboa Park, and La Jolla. Along the way we check out local markets, grab coffee, try some amazing food, walk along the harbour, and end the day watching the sunset by the ocean… or, well, that was the PLAN before dinner took an unexpected turn!
San Diego feels completely different from what we expected. It’s walkable, laid-back, full of green spaces, and somehow manages to feel both like a big city and a beach town at the same time.
By the end of the day we finally understood something people had been telling us this whole trip…
Now we understand California.
Join us as we explore San Diego for the first time and see why so many people say it’s one of the best places to live in the United States.

Overrated
The $10 parking at Balboa Park was just started this year, there was so much public outcry over it that it will be abolished January 1. So you muct come back for the free parking and to film the rest of the park!
I am a long time resident of San Diego. I really enjoyed your review. Thank you for being so positive.
As a local Diegan, if you can't afford to pay $4500+/month to live in the area everyone talks about, this city is horrible. Overpriced and overrated. Don't forget all beaches south of La Jolla are contaminated 60% of the year.
Even in America you got to speak your mother's language..how cool is that? Don't know if you ever saw the movie In the Line of Fire .a German woman said I love America it's is the place where you can visit the home of the President
I lived in SD for a year and I did go back over the years for visits from the east coast. The area back in the day did not have as built up a downtown. I noticed over the years the build up there. So back then it was all about the beaches. I am surprised you did not do a beach visit. I think that the #1 thing for me was the weather. Generally it seemed to be 75 to 80 degrees everyday with no humidity. Rain only a few times per year. With such nice weather you can plan just about any outdoor activities with no worry. Also it's so much more laid back there than LA. I found the people there to also be laid back. Also lots of folks there were into outdoor fitness activities …
On the negative side be aware that the homeless problem is getting out of hand. I see more and more homeless on each visit.
San Diego childhood here… did you guys even know that the San Diego Zoo, largest in the world, is right there where you were in Balboa Park?
I’m a native New Yorker who has been to California many times. Travelled from north to south and must agree that San Diego is my favorite city of all. Please do go back when you can and make sure to drive over the bridge from San Diego proper to the island of Coronado! You’ll thank me. Also come back to New York and make sure you explore Brooklyn and Queens next time!!
Born and raised in Upstate NY. Took a week vacation in SD in 1991 and was captivated by all the same things you were. You didn’t go into the ocean and body surf. That was the closer. Moved the following year and been here ever since, well except for a 2yr work stint in Germany. You can fall in love with something different everyday here!! Glad you liked it. Come back again and pick of the few other spots mentioned in the comments. You won’t be disappointed!!
My old CEO lived in San Diego when he ran a public company. I mentioned to him I heard that it gets REALLY HOT if you go 10 miles inland. He said, “No, try two miles from the coast.” The wonderful weather you’re feeling is not so wonderful if you go inland only a couple miles.
I am from San Diego as well. I was raised in San Francisco, but I will never see myseld to live in SF. SD is so beautiful
San Diego born and raised. This is absolutely the best best cities in the world to live for a metropolitan city. They just have to get rid of the horrible government.
Born in San Diego. Been to Sweden 6 times. Grandmother was from Vrå, Småland. Favorite is in Leksand with friends.
Parking in Balboa Park was free for a long time….used to just park my car up there and go for a walk. Charging for parking is quite recent…used to take that for granted lol.
thank you for showing my city and glad you guys enjoyed it so much! San Diego is truly heaven on earth
I live here and yes, it is great! Glad you enjoyed my city.
Currently in San Diego. Yeah imagine living in La Jolla…
San Diego native here. San Diego is special for sure. When people ask where I’m from I say San Diego and everyone is jealous
Congrats 🎉
San Diego is the best vibe of America for living.
The area has been on the right for decades but is now sliding far-left like Los Angeles so expect to see a big decline in the quality of life in the area. Soon it will be as bad as Los Angeles.
Long lines at a restaurant can mean 3 things; 1. The food is good. 2. They are understaffed. 3. The workers are lazy.
…That taco place most likely had lazy workers.
Yea everyone loves San Diego! That’s why it’s so expensive! Haha
I find it interesting that people say SD is more livable than SF. SD to me is more of a retirement place or a vacation spot whereas SF is for living. SD while not the worst, doesnt have great public transit at all. SD is INCREDIBLY clean though! Might have something to do with how wealthy the average person out there is though. I believe a starter home out there is among the most expensive in the country at like $1.2 million. Rent for a studio usually starts around $2k a month.
Balboa was the name of a famous Spanish explorer. He was like the Spain version of Christopher Columbus. Most of the western US was settled by Spain/Mexico and has heavy influence in the name (SAN Diego, SAN Francisco, LOS Angeles, etc….)
24 hrs in san diego?
It’s really fun watching you guys enjoy my city
San Diego overrated check out Seattle Washington way better!!!
San Diego is probably the fan favorite of all Californians. If you polled all 40 million of us for the best city in California, San Diego would be the most common answer. However, I think San Francisco is the most beautiful city in the country. I went to Twin Peaks at sunrise yesterday, at that view alone is unbeatable by any other major city, in my subjective opinion. Definitely recommend looking up "Twin Peaks at sunrise/sunset", if you aren't familiar with it.
We are bordered by Mexico to the south, peninsular Mtn range to the east, Camp Pendleton North and of course the big blue- West. We really are a gated community of people who truly love ❤and appreciate the best of So Cal. When so many are transplants here from other states and countries, San Diego has a huge native population born and raised making it one of the few “Communities” in So California. We take pride in our City and appreciate you so much for exploring and showcasing our town. Please come back and have a local beer
I would reccomend you skip downtown san diego unless you want to drink. Just go to the waterfront instead.
GO TO NEWPORT BEACH SOMETIME IN SUMMER
Being from San Diego is very much a double-edged sword. You really don't realize how good you've got it until you leave it, and then when you come back you find some developer has taken a bulldozer and leveled off one of the coastal hills to put up a bunch of cardboard condominiums. A lot of the habitat along the sea has been overdeveloped and we don't see certain animals anymore. There is growing pollution and trash in places like blacks Beach, along with very superficial people that take selfies while leaving trash on the beach, not to mention the people that encroach upon the sea lions in La Jolla just to get a selfie. If there's one thing I want people to get from San Diego is that there is a way to live more harmonious with nature. And being cool means you can get that photo without having to harm or disrupt the wildlife.
Okay here's how California works, there's a place to go to the beach, there's a place to go skiing, there's a place to go to the forest, there's a place to go to the desert, there's a place to go see snow in the mountains, there's a place to go to the city, and then there's Hollywood. There's a place to be in the endless suburbs, and there's a place to be out in the middle of nowhere, there's a place to get high, and there's a place to get low.
I grew up in San Diego. La Jolla specifically.
Yo I live in San Diego but I live in the Chula Vista area 0:47
You can go to the beach at night too. Still amazing.
Glad you had a good time. 😊
That wait time for cold tacos was crazy.
If you ever come back, would love to show you some other areas of San Diego, especially for tacos, the Taco Stand is not it, you gotta go south to Chula Vista! Glad you all enjoyed our beautiful city!
I'm with generation San Diegan, my family came here in 1888. I was lucky enough to grow up in Point Loma surfing almost everyday. I will let you know they are no longer going to charge to park at Balboa Park, that didn't go over well with us locals. I moved away once for ten years for work to Sacramento California and actually ended up quitting that job so I could get back to where I belong, San Diego!
You need to spend several days in SD. Colorado island and the seaside village
It only rains about 10 days per year. Cloudy until 10-10:30. Then 75 -85 degrees. It is one of the 2 best weather in the western hemisphere.
